Jiji, Cars45 seal merger deal: Officials speak on plans for African market
Jiji, Cars45 seal merger deal: Officials speak on plans for African market

It is official; Jiji has signed merger deal with African car sales platform, Cars45.

Jiji, the largest online marketplace in Africa belongs to Ukrainian IT company Genesis. However, the financial details of the deal were not made public.

Jiji, supported by Lemma. Group, and Cars45 on Tuesday announced that both companies had reached an agreement, under which they will merge their operations in Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria.

Jiji acquires Cars45

Jiji acquires Cars45

The merger of Cars45, with its transactional business model, is part of Jiji’s long-term strategy toward transactional marketplaces, according to the Investor Relations Manager, Jiji, Maxim Makarchuk.

Speaking during a press conference in Lagos where the merger was officially announced in Nigeria, Makarchuk, affirmed that the deal will further strengthen Jiji’s position in all the countries where both companies operate and help mitigate some customers’ safety concerns by improving their car-buying and selling.

With this deal, Jiji will now venture into the transactional marketplace for the first time.

Jiji was launched in Nigeria in 2014 as an online marketplace that provides buyers and sellers with an avenue to meet and exchange goods and services.

Cars45 on the other hand is a transactional marketplace for car buyers and sellers. The company was founded by former Konga executive Etop Ikpe and has been under different ownership over the last couple of years.

Cars45 first received $5 million in funding in 2017 from the Frontier Cars Group (A company that subsequently became the parent company of Cars45), with support from Balderton Capital, EchoVC, and TPG Growth.

Soon after, Netherlands-based OLX Group acquired Cars45 from FCG, via its OLX Autos brand.

Although Jiji didn’t disclose the details of the acquisition of Cars45, it feels like a total acquisition from the OLX group.

This, however, is not Jiji’s first acquisition. Back in 2019, Naspers-owned online marketplace, OLX, sold its assets in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to Nigeria’s biggest classifieds player.

Jiji with 5 million+ app installs in Nigeria alone now operates in Kenya, Ghana, Uganda, and Tanzania, with over 400 employees.

The site contains over 4 million active listings worth more than $10 billion, with 300,000+ sellers trading.

The car category is the second most popular, with more than 300,000 active listings.

In May 2021, Jiji became the first major profitable e-commerce company in the region.

Jiji is also regarded as the No. 1 brand in the target market.

Commenting on the value propositions of marriage between the two companies, Makarchuk, said: “Jiji has seen value in Cars45 as Nigeria’s largest technology enabled automotive trading platform. So, this will give Jiji that leverage in the market whereas Jiji’s massive database with 4million+ active listings and 300,000+ sellers trading will boost Cars45’s operations.

Nodding in agreement, the CEO, Cars45, Soumobroto Ganguly, stated that a platform that leverages technology to provide end-to-end digitized customer journey for automotive transactions for corporate organisations and individuals, the merger will make it even easier to facilitate automotive trading for Nigerians and other markets where they operate as well as access to finance, insurance, maintenance and servicing and other value-added services.

He said, “We are proud to have built a trusted buying and selling experience in autos. It makes sense to combine online and offline expertise. Merging with Jiji is aimed at creating a new kind of automotive retail experience for users in Africa. We are confident of jointly building an African Champion in the O2O Automotive Sector. Together we look forward to making transactions transparent and convenient for our customers, dealers, and franchisees across all our current and future markets.

Commenting on plans for rebranding, Ganguly said, “There are different teams working on different aspects of the business. And it is left for the Board to decide on the processes. Presently, the brand status quos shall be maintained, but we are looking that towards the end of the year; there could be information on rebranding Cars45”.

Jiji and Cars45 press conference

L-R – VP, Trade & Business Development, Cars45, Femi Folarin; VP, Commercial, Cars45, Patricia Duru; CEO, Cars45, Soumobroto Ganguly; Director, Jiji Africa, Yuliy Shenfeld; VP, Technical Services, Cars45, Pankaj Bohra; VP, Central Support Services & People Operations, Cars45, Olajumoke Obembe and Investor Relations Manager, Jiji, Maxim Makarchuk at a media parley to announce a merger between Cars45 and Jiji in Lagos.

In a nutshell, Maxim, Soumobroto and other speakers at the press conference expressed optimisms that the marriage between Jiji and Cars45 will benefit the customers/clients and the African markets at large.

Delhi Riots: Facebook India Head Ajit Mohan’s Plea Against Summons Dismissed
Delhi Riots: Facebook India Head Ajit Mohan’s Plea Against Summons Dismissed

The Supreme Court Thursday dismissed a plea filed by Facebook India Vice President and MD Ajit Mohan challenging the summons issued by the Delhi Assembly’s Peace and Harmony committee for failing to appear before it as witness in connection with the north-east Delhi riots last year.

A bench headed by Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul termed Mohan’s plea as pre-mature saying nothing has happened against him before the Assembly panel.

Pronouncing the verdict, Justice Kaul said that technological age has created digital platforms which can be uncontrollable at times.

The bench, also comprising Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and Hrishikesh Roy, delivered its verdict on the plea filed by Mohan, Facebook India Online Services and Facebook which contended that the committee lacked power to summon or hold petitioners in breach of privileges for failing to appear before it and had exceeded its constitutional limits.

The top court said the option of not answering before the committee cannot be disputed and representative of the petitioner can deny answering the question if it falls within the prohibited domains.
It said the Assembly does not have the power to legislate on the issue of law and order which falls under the Union List in the Constitution.

It said the objective of peace and harmony go beyond law and order and police.

The bench said in the judgement, it has divided the issues into three categories – privilege, free speech, and legislative competence.

The petitioners had challenged last year’s September 10 and 18 notices issued by the committee which sought Mohan’s presence before the panel probing the Delhi riots in February and Facebook’s role in spread of alleged hate speeches.

The Delhi Assembly had earlier said that no coercive action has been taken against Mohan and he was only summoned by its committee to appear as witness in connection with north-east Delhi riots.

In an affidavit filed in the top court, the Delhi Assembly had said that Mohan has not been issued any summons for breach of privilege.

During the arguments before the apex court, Mohan’s counsel had said that “right to silence” is a virtue in present “noisy times” and the assembly has no legislative power to set up a panel to examine the issue of peace and harmony.

Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the Facebook official, had said that setting up of the peace panel was not the core function of Delhi assembly as the law and order issue fell under the domain of the Centre in the national capital.

Senior advocate A M Singhvi, representing the panel of the assembly, had said that the assembly has the power to summon.

However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta had opposed the submission of the panel of the assembly saying that law and order squarely fell under the domain of Delhi Police which is accountable to the Central government.

Earlier in December last year, the Peace and Harmony committee had moved the top court seeking to intervene in the plea filed by Mohan and others.

On October 15 last year, the Centre had told the top court that proceedings of the Peace and Harmony committee is “without jurisdiction” as the issue pertained to law and order.

The apex court had said that its September 23 last year order asking the assembly’s panel not to take any coercive action against Mohan, would continue till further orders.

Telenor Quits Myanmar With 5-Million Sale to Lebanon’s M1 Group
Telenor Quits Myanmar With $105-Million Sale to Lebanon’s M1 Group

Norwegian telecoms firm Telenor has sold its Myanmar business, blaming the difficulties of operating under the military junta and dealing a blow to activists who say they relied on the only Western operator for communications.

Telenor, one of the biggest foreign investors in Myanmar, sold its Myanmar operations to Lebanese investment firm M1 Group for $105 million (roughly Rs. 790 crores), announcing its retreat from a country that slid into chaos after a military coup in February.

It was one of the few Western companies to bet on the South East Asian country after it emerged from military dictatorship a decade ago. Myanmar accounted for 7 percent of Telenor’s earnings last year.

“There are three reasons why we think a sale is necessary: it is the safety of our employees, but also the regulatory conditions and also that there is good compliance,” Telenor CEO Sigve Brekke told Reuters.

“When we wrote off the business in May, we felt we could still operate in the country, although it was challenging. But after that, it has worsened.”

In May, Telenor booked a loss of NOK 6.5 billion (roughly Rs. 5,530 crores) after seeing its mobile business in Myanmar severely restricted following the February 1 military coup.

On March 15, the junta ordered a nationwide shutdown of mobile data, making it harder for pro-democracy activists to organise protests and circulate messages supporting the overthrown civilian government.

Violence since the February 1 coup has driven more than 230,000 people from their homes. More than 880 people have been killed by security forces and 5,200 are in detention, the United Nations says.

Myanmar’s junta has banned senior foreign executives of major telecommunications firms from leaving the country without permission and it is pressuring them to fully implement intercept technology that would let authorities monitor users, a source told Reuters earlier this week.

Human rights

Activists expressed concern over the exit of Telenor, one of two foreign operators present alongside Qatar’s Ooredoo. The other operators in Myanmar are state-backed MPT and Mytel, which is part-owned by a military-linked company.

“We are mostly relying on Telenor,” campaigner Thet Swe Win told Reuters. “Most of the activists rely on it as a company which has respect for human rights. I hope that the new company will respect human rights as Telenor did in the past.”

M1 Group was a major investor in Myanmar’s largest independent tower company, Irrawaddy Green Towers (IGT), which has a master lease agreement with military-backed telecom Mytel. Private equity company CVC said in February it would buy IGT from M1 Group and other shareholders.

M1 Group was not immediately available for comment.

Some Telenor investors welcomed the decision.

“It is positive to see that Telenor did not compromise on their basic principles regarding human rights,” said Janicke Scheele, head of responsible investments at DNB Asset Management, Telenor’s 6th largest investor with a 1.51 percent stake.

“We have had multiple dialogues with Telenor on this and this undoubtedly presented a considerable dilemma for the company,” she told Reuters.

The Norwegian state-controlled operator has operations in the Nordics as well as in Asia, where 95 percent of its 187 million customers reside – in Bangladesh, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Thailand, as well as Myanmar.

It has around 18 million customers in Myanmar, serving a third of its 54 million population.

Mads Rosendal, senior analyst at Danske Bank Credit Research, said the price tag was low, given how much Myanmar has contributed to Telenor’s earnings.

“On the margin we … see this as slightly credit negative as we had hoped to see a higher value,” he said.

Telenor’s shares traded at NOK 148.05 (roughly Rs. 1,260) at 0921 GMT (2:51pm IST), unchanged from Wednesday’s close.

Poco F3 GT India Launch Teased: All You Need to Know
Poco F3 GT India Launch Teased: All You Need to Know

Poco F3 GT India launch has been teased ahead of its official announcement. The new Poco phone is speculated to debut as early as August, but the brand is yet to confirm the launch date. Poco F3 GT is rumoured to debut as a rebranded Redmi K40 Gaming Edition that was launched in China in April. The smartphone is confirmed to have a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC. Last month, Poco expanded its smartphone portfolio in India, with the launch of Poco M3 Pro 5G. It included features such as triple rear cameras and a MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC.

The Poco India account tweeted a promotional video to tease the launch of Poco F3 GT in the country. The 15-second video doesn’t provide any concrete details, though it shows people’s queries around Poco F3 GT to indicate its imminent launch.

The teaser video also reiterates the third quarter launch timeline that Poco India Country Director Anuj Sharma announced in May. Further, the video gives us a glimpse of Poco F3 GT at the end. The sneak peek hints at the presence of game triggers on one side of the phone. This indicates that the new model could just be a rebadged Redmi K40 Gaming Edition that came with similar-looking game trigger buttons. Earlier reports also suggested that Poco F3 GT could be a rebadged version of Redmi K40 Gaming Edition that is currently available in China.

In the past, Poco did bring some rebadged Redmi phones to the market, including the most recently launched Poco M3 Pro 5G that is a rebranding of Redmi Note 10 5G.

Exact launch date of Poco F3 GT is yet to be revealed. However, given the latest teaser video and the rumoured August launch timeline, Poco may soon announce the release date of the smartphone.
