ByteDance’s Toutiao Said to Be Ordered by China to Halt New Registrations
ByteDance’s Toutiao Said to Be Ordered by China to Halt New Registrations

TikTok owner ByteDance has been blocking new user and content creator registrations for its Chinese news aggregator Jinri Toutiao since September at the behest of regulators, according to people familiar with the matter.

The halt on new registrations had not been previously reported. Some content creators have said on social media that they couldn’t register for new accounts on Toutiao.

The reason for the blockage could not be immediately determined. Toutiao’s app can still be downloaded and existing users can use it.

ByteDance declined to comment. The sources declined to be identified given the sensitivity of the matter.

The Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which oversee Toutiao’s operations, did not reply to requests for comment.

China has been reining in its massive and once free-wheeling “platform economy” on concerns ranging from the appropriateness of content to anticompetitive behaviours and, increasingly, data security.

Earlier this month, the CAC announced a probe into ride-hailing firm Didi Global, citing cybersecurity and national security concerns, with a ban on new user registrations just days after it went public in a $4.4 billion (roughly Rs. 32,810 crores) New York share sale, rattling the industry and investors.

The regulator followed up with the removal of Didi and its affiliated apps from Chinese app stores.

Toutiao is ByteDance’s second-largest advertisement revenue source in China, after Douyin, Reuters has reported, accounting for around 20 percent of sales in the country last year, or about CNY 36 billion (roughly Rs. 41,510 crores). ByteDance raked in $34.3 billion (roughly Rs. 2,55,750 crores) in total revenue last year.

When trying to sign up to Toutiao, new users see a message: “System is currently under maintenance. Registration is temporarily unavailable.” New content creators receive a similar message.

Jinri Toutiao, which means “today’s headline” in Chinese, uses an artificial-intelligence-driven recommendation system to offer personalised news feeds.

This is not the first time the news aggregator has been penalised by authorities. In 2018, Chinese regulators ordered app stores to remove Toutiao for three weeks, citing “vulgar content”.

ByteDance, which was valued at $300 billion (roughly Rs. 22,36,890 crores) in recent private trades, had planned earlier this year to list some of its businesses including TikTok’s Chinese version Douyin in Hong Kong, sources have said. In April ByteDance said it had no imminent plans to list itself.

In 2018, ByteDance’s joke app Neihan Duanzi was permanently shut for hosting what the country’s broadcasting watchdog said was “vulgar” and “improper” content that had triggered “strong resentment among users”.

iPhone 13 Series Tipped to Come With Wi-Fi 6E Support This Year
iPhone 13 Series Tipped to Come With Wi-Fi 6E Support This Year

iPhone 13 series is expected to launch in September year and expected to come with Wi-Fi 6E support for the 6GHz band and increased range, a new report says. The latest Apple smartphone is expected to come with upgraded cameras, particularly the wide-angle lens, and expanded mmWave support to more regions.

A DigiTimes report cites industry sources to say Apple will incorporate Wi-Fi 6E technology into its new iPhones this year, and the technology is expected to become a standard feature of both iOS and Android smartphones in 2022.

This will lead to significant gains for Taiwan’s GaAs IC foundries Win Semiconductors, Advanced Wireless Semiconductor Company (AWSC), and GaAs epi-wafer supplier Visual Photonics Epitaxy Company (VPEC).

Apple introduced Wi-Fi 6 with the iPhone 11, which significantly improved speeds and security than the previous generation Wi-Fi 5 protocol. Wi-Fi 6E is considered as a slight upgrade in comparison as t only adds minimal 6GHz band support. This will result in increased bandwidth and less interference for devices that support Wi-Fi 6E.

The report adds that the three companies mentioned above will also see third quarter revenue increase further because of VCSEL chips demand as iPhones continue to adopt 3D Face ID sensors for general models and ToF LiDAR scanners for Pro series.

A recent Bloomberg report suggests that Apple has asked suppliers to build as many as 90 million next-generation iPhone handsets this year, a sharp increase from its 2020 iPhone shipments. Apple is planning updates to all of the current models with at least one of the new versions reported to be having an LTPO display.

New emoji are coming this year, but one is already controversial
New emoji are coming this year, but one is already controversial

Get ready to express yourself in a whole new way – 102 new ways, to be exact. That’s how many fresh emoji are coming to your smartphone, computer and web browser later this year. Draft versions of these all-new characters have been released to mark World Emoji Day on July 17, 2021 and you can already vote for your favourite.

New emoji are usually unveiled in March each year, however, this latest batch was delayed due to Covid. That means the designers have had a little bit longer to work on them and it seems to have paid off in some unusual and unique designs. Voting for the World Emoji Awards is now open and you can vote for any of the new emojis in the “Most Anticipated Emoji” category.

For some, the new uses cases for the characters are pretty obvious. You will be able to send a friendly handshake in 18 different skin tone variations, while a smart saluting emoji is perfect for those patriotic moments.

The sweet “heart hands” symbol is sure to become an instant favourite for sending support to loved ones. Another shows a face peering through its fingers – maybe cringing at a horror movie or car-crash reality show. The shiny new disco ball will be welcomed by fans of ABBA and Eurovision. A troll character could be used to point out bad behaviour on social media.

Others are a little more obscure. The “hand with eye” emoji is a “hamsa” symbol, which is popular throughout the Middle East as an amulet said to ward off the “evil eye”. We can’t see many uses for the x-ray, beans or ring buoy emojis, although the melting smiley will come in handy during heatwaves.

However, the most controversial by far has been the “pregnant man” and “pregnant person” characters, which have already sparked debate across the internet. One man said that despite the intended use, “I’m just gonna use it whenever I eat too much.” Another joked “this is the emoji you send your mate after drinking all evening and scranning a dirty kebab”.

Others said it was a gesture of inclusion to the few hundred transgender men who give birth every year. “Trans men can get pregnant, AND trans men are just as much as a man than those who are born in the right body,” wrote one Twitter user.

Love them or loathe them, you’ll have to wait a little bit longer to start using the new designs. At the moment the emoji are just proposals from Unicode, the organisation which creates and manages all official emoji.

The final versions will be approved in September this year. And because every vendor, like Apple, Samsung and Google, can choose how to display the symbols, they might end up looking a little bit different by the time you see them again.

In other emoji news, Microsoft has redesigned some old favourites for its Office range of products. Instead of a paperclip, users will see a miniature Clippy, the hated “virtual assistant” from Windows 97, which made a dramatic return this week. It has also created more colourful 3D versions of the other emojis, like the unicorn and smiley faces, with quirky new expressions.

Xiaomi Beats Apple for World’s No. 2 Smartphone Maker Spot: Canalys
Xiaomi Beats Apple for World’s No. 2 Smartphone Maker Spot: Canalys

Xiaomi overtook Apple in the second quarter of 2021 to become the world’s No. 2 smartphone maker, market research firm Canalys said in a report on Thursday.

Xiaomi took the second spot for the first time with 17 percent share of worldwide smartphone shipments, up 3 percent from the previous quarter, according to the market research firm.

Global smartphone shipments grew 12 percent in the second quarter, led by Samsung Electronics with a 19 percent share, and Apple at third place with a 14 percent share.

The average selling price of Xiaomi phones is about 40 percent to 75 percent cheaper compared with Samsung and Apple, respectively, Canalys Research Manager Ben Stanton said, adding that a major priority for Xiaomi this year is to grow sales of its high-end devices.

The company’s shipments jumped more than 300 percent in Latin America, 150 percent in Africa, and 50 percent in Western Europe, the report said.

Vivo and Oppo maintained a strong growth momentum to complete the top five smartphone makers’ global ranking, according to the report. Both Oppo and Vivo secured a 10 percent share of global shipments each in Q2 2021 and secured the number 4 and number 5 spots, respectively.

Samsung on top had a steady growth of 15 percent in year-on-year shipments, while Xiaomi’s global shipments grew by a staggering 83 percent and Apple at number 3 grew marginally by 1 percent, the report shows. Oppo and Vivo shipments increased by 28 percent and 27 percent, respectively.

Will FIFA 22 be cross-platform? What we know about crossplay for Xbox and PlayStation
Will FIFA 22 be cross-platform? What we know about crossplay for Xbox and PlayStation

EA has released a statement via their official website that addresses whether FIFA 22 will support cross-play between different gaming platforms.

Many FIFA fans were disappointed when EA revealed last year that FIFA 21 wouldn’t support cross-platform play ahead of the release of the game. Cross-platform play is the ability to match up against or play with people on different platforms, including Xbox, PlayStation and PC.

Cross-platform play already features in numerous popular gaming titles, including the free-to-play battle-royale title Call of Duty: Warzone, with players on Xbox, PlayStation and PC able to play with or against each other, even if they have a different generation of console.

This has led to speculation that FIFA 22 could possibly support cross-platform play when it’s released later this year.

But FIFA fans are facing further disappointment with the newest FIFA game.

Because it looks like FIFA 22 will NOT support cross-platform play, according to EA’s official website.

In a statement on their official website, EA said: “You will be able to match up with and against other players based on the version of FIFA 22 that you are playing.

“If you are playing the PlayStation 4 version of FIFA 22 you will be able to match up and play with and against other players who are playing on the same version of FIFA 22, regardless of whether they are playing on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5.

Will FIFA 22 be cross-platform? What we know about crossplay for Xbox and PlayStation
FIFA 22 will NOT support cross platform play, EA has confirmed via a statement

“The same is true for the Xbox One version of FIFA 22, where you will be able to match up and play with and against other players who are playing the same version on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.

“If you are playing the PlayStation 5 version of FIFA 22, you will only be able to match up with and play against other players who are playing the PlayStation 5 version.

“The same is true for the Xbox Series X|S version of FIFA 22, where only players on Xbox Series X|S will be able to play each other.”

So there you have it. It looks like FIFA 22 players will be unable to play with players on different platforms, and will also be unable to play with people who have a different generation of console.

It looks like PlayStation 4 players will be unable to match up against players using the PlayStation 5 version of FIFA 22, and the same goes for Xbox One players who will be unable to match up against players using the Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X version of FIFA 22.

However, players using a next-generation console like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S or Xbox Series X are able to install the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One edition of the game on their console, which would then allow you to match up against those players on that current-gen version of the game.

Fans got their first look at FIFA 22 in the official reveal trailer, as EA unveiled a number of new gameplay features that will be coming to the game including HyperMotion Technology.

EA has also revealed that FIFA 22 will be released in the UK and worldwide on Friday, October 1, 2021, with the game available to pre-order now for PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Stadia and PC.

Microsoft Says Israeli Group Sold Tools to Hack Windows
Microsoft Says Israeli Group Sold Tools to Hack Windows

An Israeli group sold a tool to hack into Microsoft Windows, Microsoft, and technology human rights group Citizen Lab said on Thursday, shedding light on the growing business of finding and selling tools to hack widely used software.

The hacking tool vendor, named Candiru, created and sold a software exploit that can penetrate Windows, one of many intelligence products sold by a secretive industry that finds flaws in common software platforms for their clients, said a report by Citizen Lab.

Technical analysis by security researchers details how Candiru’s hacking tool spread around the globe to numerous unnamed customers, where it was then used to target various civil society organisations, including a Saudi dissident group and a left-leaning Indonesian news outlet, the reports by Citizen Lab and Microsoft show.

Attempts to reach Candiru for comment were unsuccesful.

Evidence of the exploit recovered by Microsoft suggested it was deployed against users in several countries, including Iran, Lebanon, Spain, and the United Kingdom, according to the Citizen Lab report.

“Candiru’s growing presence, and the use of its surveillance technology against global civil society, is a potent reminder that the mercenary spyware industry contains many players and is prone to widespread abuse,” Citizen Lab said in its report.

Microsoft fixed the discovered flaws on Tuesday through a software update. Microsoft did not directly attribute the exploits to Candiru, instead referring to it as an “Israel-based private sector offensive actor” under the codename Sourgum.

“Sourgum generally sells cyberweapons that enable its customers, often government agencies around the world, to hack into their targets’ computers, phones, network infrastructure, and Internet-connected devices,” Microsoft wrote in a blog post. “These agencies then choose who to target and run the actual operations themselves.”

Candiru’s tools also exploited weaknesses in other common software products, like Google’s Chrome browser.

On Wednesday, Google released a blog post where it disclosed two Chrome software flaws that Citizen Lab found connected to Candiru. Google also did not refer to Candiru by name, but described it as a “commercial surveillance company.” Google patched the two vulnerabilities earlier this year.

Cyber arms dealers like Candiru often chain multiple software vulnerabilities together to create effective exploits that can reliably break into computers remotely without a target’s knowledge, computer security experts say.

Those types of covert systems cost millions of dollars and are often sold on a subscription basis, making it necessary for customers to repeatedly pay a provider for continued access, people familiar with the cyber arms industry told Reuters.

“No longer do groups need to have the technical expertise, now they just need resources,” Google wrote in its blog post.

NFL Star Saquon Barkley Wants His Endorsement Money to Be Paid in Bitcoin
NFL Star Saquon Barkley Wants His Endorsement Money to Be Paid in Bitcoin

In a breakthrough of sorts for Bitcoin, Saquon Barkley, who plays for the New York Giants in America’s National Football League (NFL), has announced that going forward, he will be taking all his endorsement money only in the world’s oldest and biggest cryptocurrency. Barkley’s decision is being seen as an indication of cryptocurrency’s growing popularity despite the volatility that accompanies it.

According to a tweet by Joe Pompliano, who is into breaking down the business and money in sports, Barkley makes more than $10 million (roughly Rs. 74.6 crores) annually in endorsements. He, now, expects this money in Bitcoin, which over the past month or so hasn’t had a great run in the market. Bitcoin price in India has also seen massive fluctuations this year, as has been the case with much of the cryptocurrency market.

The American football Running Back is, however, not the first athlete to demand his endorsement-related remuneration in cryptocurrency. Last month, Sacramento Kings, an American professional basketball team, which competes in the National Basketball Association (NBA), announced that their staff could get as much part of their salary as they wished in Bitcoin.

Vivek Ranadivé, the Chairman, CEO, and Governor of the Sacramento Kings, in a Clubhouse discussion, made the announcement. “I’m going to announce in the next few days that I’m going to offer everyone in the Kings organisation, they can get paid as much of their salary in Bitcoin as they want, including the players,” Ranadivé said, according to a report in Forbes.

Another athlete, Russell Okung, the Carolina Panthers Offensive Tackle, who plays in the NFL tweeted in May 2019: “Pay me in Bitcoin.” In December last year, he became the first professional athlete in any major US sport to be paid in Bitcoin. Okung, however, wasn’t paid directly in crypto tokens.

So what could be the reason behind players opting for or demanding to be paid in Bitcoin? In December 2021, when Okung converted $7.5 million — just a little over half of his salary — into Bitcoin, the currency was trading at $27,318 (roughly Rs. 20 lakhs). In the next few months, the digital currency witnessed an unprecedented boom crossing even the $60,000-mark, accruing huge profits to its investors. Matt Barkley, another American Quarterback, tried to convince his team to pay his contract in Bitcoin, but that couldn’t happen.

According to a report in Nasdaq, Mark Cuban’s Dallas Mavericks, who play in the NBA, started accepting Bitcoin as payment for game tickets and merchandise in 2019. “We want our fans who would like to pay with Bitcoin [to have] the opportunity to do so,” said Cuban.

On Friday, Bitcoin was trading at Rs 23,58,865, following a 2.49 percent slump in the last 24 hours.
