Hello Future Humans! NASA Is Launching a Time Capsule Spacecraft in October – Review Geek

Artist's depiction of Lucy spacecraft

Odds are, you probably created a simple time capsule at some point during school, and enjoyed looking through it when you opened it up later on. Now NASA is installing a time capsule on its Lucy spacecraft intended for future humans, which is set to launch in October.

Lucy isn’t the first time capsule-style spacecraft humans have sent out into space. But while the Pioneer and Voyager probes were designed for whatever—or whoever—is lurking in interstellar space, Lucy will stay in our solar system and (hopefully) be recovered by future humans.

NASA worked with a variety of individuals to curate the contents of the capsule, which takes the form of a plaque. It features words from Nobel Laureates, Poet Laureates, and musicians along with a depiction of our solar system’s configuration as of October 16, 2021—the date Lucy is scheduled to launch on.

The Lucy Plaque, detailed more in the video below, includes some truly fantastic quotes from prominent people like Carl Sagan, Martin Luther King Jr., Albert Einstein, Kazuo Ishiguro, Juan Felipe Herrera, Charles Simic, Billy Collins, Rita Dove, Amanda Gorman, Orhan Pamuk, Joy Harjo, Brian May (of the band Queen), and all four Beatles. Each quote touches on topics central to the human experience like love, hope, cultural memory, the heavens, and eternity.

Once launched, the Lucy spacecraft will remain in a stable orbit traveling between Earth and the Trojan asteroids near Jupiter for hundreds of thousands of years, if not millions.

The quote by Charles Simic, Serbian American Poet and Pulitzer Prize winner, reads, “I’m writing to you from a world you’ll have a hard time imagining, to a world I can’t picture no matter how hard I try. Do you still have birds that wake you up in the morning with their singing and lovers who gaze at the stars trying to read in them the fate of their love? If you do, we’ll recognize one another.”

American writer and science journalist Dava Sobel also wrote, “We, the inquisitive people of Earth, sent this robot spacecraft to explore the pristine small bodies orbiting near the largest planet in our solar system. We sought to trace our own origins as far back as evidence allowed. Even as we looked to the ancient past, we thought ahead to the day you might recover this relic of our science.” Hopefully, future astronomer-archaeologists will recover the capsule, share this teeny bit of our history with their civilization, and remember us fondly.

What Is Pegasus Spyware That Reports Say Targeted Indians on WhatsApp?
What Is Pegasus Spyware That Reports Say Targeted Indians on WhatsApp?

Pegasus spyware was reportedly used to spy on Indians, a new report says. In 2019, WhatsApp brought the matter to light when it sued Israeli spyware maker NSO Group for its Pegasus spyware that was allegedly used to snoop on journalists, activists, lawyers and senior government officials in 20 countries around the world, including India, in May this year. WhatsApp revealed that it has contacted several Indian users who are believed to be the targets of illegal snooping using the Pegasus spyware.

Although the seeming confirmation about the use of Pegasus came after WhatsApp sued NSO Group, the use of Pegasus has long been suspected in the WhatsApp cyberattack that was first reported in 2019.

What is Pegasus and how does it infect devices?

According to The Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto, which helped WhatsApp with the investigation into the cyber-attack, Pegasus is the flagship spyware of Israel-based NSO Group. It is believed to be known by other names as well, like Q Suite and Trident. Pegasus reportedly has the ability to infiltrate both Android and iOS devices and it uses a number of ways to hack into a target’s mobile devices, including using zero-day exploits.

In the case of WhatsApp, Pegasus has said to have used a vulnerability in WhatsApp VoIP stack that is used to place video and audio calls. Just a missed call on WhatsApp allowed Pegasus to gain access to the target’s device.

The Citizen Lab notes that Pegasus has used other ways in the past to infiltrate a target’s device, like getting the target to click on a link using social engineering or using fake package notifications to deploy the spyware. Pegasus has been around since 2016 and it was also believed to have been used to target Indians earlier as well.

What can Pegasus do?

Pegasus is a versatile piece of spyware and as soon as it is installed on a target’s device, it starts contacting control servers, which can then relay commands to gather data from the infected device. Pegasus can steal information like passwords, contacts, text messages, calendar details, and even the voice calls made using messaging apps. Further, it can also snoop using the phone’s camera and microphone as well as use the GPS to track live location.

Who was hacked using Pegasus in India?

The specifics of exactly how many people were hacked in India using Pegasus through WhatsApp is unclear. However, a WhatsApp spokesperson confirmed to Gadgets 360 that Indian users were among those contacted by the company this week over the May cyber-attack.

“We sent a special WhatsApp message to approximately 1,400 users that we have reason to believe were impacted by [May 2019] attack to directly inform them about what happened,” WhatsApp wrote in a blog post.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp has also not said anything about who was behind the cyber-attack and illegal snooping. NSO Group has also denied any wrongdoing and the company claims it only sells the spyware to “vetted and legitimate government agencies.”

Does WhatsApp’s new privacy policy spell the end for your privacy? We discussed this on Orbital, the Gadgets 360 podcast. Orbital is available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, and wherever you get your podcasts.

How to Deactivate UPI Payments in Case You Lose Your Mobile Phone
How to Deactivate UPI Payments in Case You Lose Your Mobile Phone

Deactivating UPI payments becomes one of the important tasks if you’ve lost your mobile phone. Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become a prominent payment system in India, with UPI transactions crossing over 2,800 million in June. Starting from bill payments to transferring money from one bank account to another, UPI can be used for most tasks that require real-time transfer of funds. All major commercial banks in the country support UPI as a part of the collective goal to transform India into a digital economy.

But with the growth of UPI as a system for enabling digital payments, it has also become important for users to understand what they should do to save their hard-earned money.

In this article, we are detailing the steps you should take to deactivate UPI payments from your linked bank accounts in case you lose your mobile phone.

How to deactivate UPI payments in case you lose your mobile phone

Before beginning with the steps on how you can deactivate UPI transactions in case you lose your mobile phone, it is important to note that you should not share your UPI PIN or any other sensitive details with anyone during the process.

  1. Block your phone number by calling the customer care service of your network carrier. This will restrict thieves from initiating transactions using your SIM card or lost mobile phone. You may be asked to provide your personal details such as your full name, billing address, and the last recharge or bill amount paid for verification before proceeding with your request.

  2. Call your bank helpline to get your phone number blocked from your account and ask to disable UPI service.

  3. File a first information report (FIR) about losing your mobile phone. This can be easily done online for residents of most states in India.

An FAQ page on the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) site talks about blocking a mobile number in case a user has lost their mobile phone. However, there isn’t any workaround available on the site to let users get their UPI access blocked.

How to Connect Multiple Bluetooth Speakers and Headphones to One Phone
How to Connect Multiple Bluetooth Speakers and Headphones to One Phone

How can you connect more than one set of headphones or speaker Bluetooth speaker to the same Android phone or iPhone? Bluetooth devices are now a standard, but when you want to get a surround sound effect or share your music with someone else in the same place, with wired systems all you had to do was buy a cheap audio splitter. Turns out though that there are a few ways in which you can do something similar with the Bluetooth connection.

Connecting multiple Bluetooth speakers or headphones largely depends on the equipment you have, and the native Bluetooth version you support on your phone.

For instance, Bluetooth v4.2 supports only one-on-one device connection of up to 30 metres. Bluetooth v5, on the other hand, expands connection to up to 120 metres and allows you to pair up to two devices at once. Some speakers from Bose have their own audio apps that offer the functionality to pair two speakers at once. However, not all companies provide that convenience.

How to connect two Bluetooth headphones and speakers to one phone

Most phones today allow dual audio (on Android) and audio sharing (on iPhone) capabilities i.e. the ability to play audio out of two devices at the same time. iPhone 8 models and above support Audio sharing feature, so unless you have a very old handset, chances are that your phone should offer that natively. The first step then would be to try connecting your headphones and speakers one by one to your Bluetooth when you pair them for the first time.

Similarly, if you have a Samsung Galaxy S8 series or later model, then the company natively offers a Dual Audio option that allows users to pair multiple speakers and headphones. This can be found in Bluetooth Settings. Other users can try this method, provided they have the right equipment at hand:

  1. Android users need to go to Bluetooth Settings and pair either Bluetooth headphones or speakers one by one.

  2. Once connected, tap the three-dot icon on the right and click on Advanced Settings. Toggle on the ‘dual audio’ option if not already turned on. This should enable users to connect to two devices at once.

  3. For users running on Android 10 and above, they can access their connected Bluetooth devices by clicking on Media in the Quick Panel and selecting both the paired devices for audio output.

  4. iPhone users need to go to Control Center. Tap on Airplay icon and select either the paired wireless headphones or speakers to output audio simultaneously. Deselecting any one of the headphones or speakers will stop the sharing of audio on that particular device.

Why the Samsung August Unpacked is so important
Why the Samsung August Unpacked is so important

We’re now in that part of the year where phone reveals are very rare as the industry takes a short break before the never-ending autumn and winter period.

This blissful quiet is set to be pierced very soon by Samsung, as the Korean brand is set to announce a feast of tech in the next month.

While Samsung’s August Unpacked 2021 event hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, there have been numerous leaks not only giving away the date of the show but the entire slate of tech set to be revealed.

An August event has become a tradition for Samsung over the past few years, usually as a place to unveil the next version of its Note series of devices. 12 months ago, for instance, we got the excellent Note 20 Ultra and the middling Note 20.

This year is going to be very different though and Samsung has a lot riding on it.

The biggest difference is that the Note 21 isn’t going to be there. With the S21 Ultra gaining support for the Note’s iconic S Pen, the original phablet has seemingly been shelved – at least for the time being.

In its place looks to be the Z Fold 3, the latest iteration of the brand’s foldable series. Now, unlike some other members of the Trusted Reviews team, I’m all for the foldable future and think they’re one of the few genuinely interesting developments the mobile industry has taken recently.

The fact that Samsung is set to position the Z Fold as the second-most important series below the monumental Galaxy S series shows it thinks this new category is going to be big going forward.

Previously, the foldables have either been unveiled at smaller events or alongside more mainstream devices. If this August event happens as expected, the Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 will be the stars of the show.

Highlighting a foldable device, still a fairly new and unknown piece of tech, at a major event is a big deal for Samsung and it shows just how far it has improved the idea since the failures of the original Fold just a few years ago.

While Huawei has made a few scarcely available foldable phones and Google is rumoured to unveil a Pixel Fold, possibly alongside the Pixel 6 Pro, Samsung is marking itself out as the true leading in this new area.

The August Unpacked could also be the first time we really get to see the future of Wear OS in action.

Both Google and Samsung have previously teased the combination of Wear OS and Tizen, but aside from it featuring a new look and the possibility of Fitbit integration it’s something of a mystery.

Pair the interesting unveiling along with foldable taking centre stage and you have a very important day for Samsung.
