Hikers Warned Against ‘Potentially Fatal’ Route Suggested by Google Maps
Hikers Warned Against ‘Potentially Fatal’ Route Suggested by Google Maps

Mountaineering charities in Scotland have welcomed Google’s decision to investigate the routing issue at Ben Nevis, one of the most popular destinations and the highest mountain in the area. The tech giant’s response came after The John Muir Trust and Mountaineering Scotland warned hikers against relying too much on technology to navigate through the mountains, and lambasted Google for suggesting “potentially fatal” routes to Ben Nevis. They have also expressed concern over the increasing number of hikers using mapping apps to hike Ben Nevis. Depending on how people search for the route on Google Maps, it directs them to the nearest car park to the summit, which is Steal Falls, the Trust said.

However, for walkers the route up Ben Nevis “starts from the Visitor Centre”, the charity said, adding that despite putting up a sign directing people, many often “overlook” the directions. Responding to the concerns, Google said, “We built Google Maps with safety and reliability in mind, and are working quickly to investigate the routing issue on Ben Nevis.”

Heather Morning, Mountaineering Scotland’s Mountain Safety Adviser, reportedly said that it was perfectly logical for those new to mountain walking to check Google Maps for navigation. However, when they run a search for Ben Nevis “and click on the ‘car’ icon, up pops a map of your route, taking you to the car park at the head of Glen Nevis, followed by a dotted line appearing to show a route to the summit”, the John Muir Trust quoted Morning as saying in a post.

Even the most experienced mountaineers would find following that route difficult, Morning said, because it passed through a very “steep, rocky, and pathless terrain” where it would be challenging to find a safe line even in good visibility, let alone in the dark. Morning added that if one added “low cloud and rain”, the route suggested by Google Maps would be all the more dangerous.

Furthermore, Morning said that though it’s easy to assume that all the information on the internet was up to date and safe, that wasn’t the case, because “there have been a number of incidents recently where following routes downloaded off the internet have resulted in injury or worse”.

The charities advised people thinking of hiking Ben Nevis, or any other hill or mountain in the area for that matter, to also seek the advice of local guides instead of just relying on maps.

Zoom to Buy Cloud Software Provider Five9 in Billion Deal
Zoom to Buy Cloud Software Provider Five9 in $15 Billion Deal

Zoom Video Communications has agreed to buy cloud software provider Five9 in an all-stock deal worth about $14.7 billion (roughly Rs. 1,09,890 crores) to target business clients looking to boost customer engagement, it said on Sunday.

The teleconferencing services provider has become a household name and investor favourite in the year since the coronavirus pandemic, as businesses and schools adopted its services to hold virtual classes, office meets and socialise.

The San Jose, California-based company is now shifting focus to its two-year-old cloud-calling product Zoom Phone and conference-hosting product Zoom Rooms as bigger players Facebook and Alphabet’s Google amp up their video products.

The acquisition is expected to help enhance Zoom’s presence with enterprise customers and allow it to accelerate its long-term growth opportunity by adding the $24-billion (roughly Rs. 1,79,420 crores) contact center market,” Zoom said in a statement.

The acquisition will complement Zoom Phone service, an alternative to legacy phone offerings, by adding Five9’s business customers and combining its contact centre software to optimise customer interactions across channels, it added.

Five9 will become an operating unit of Zoom and its chief executive, Rowan Trollope, will become a president of the company, staying on as chief of the unit after the deal, which is expected to close in the first half of 2022, it said.

Under the pact, approved by the boards of both companies, Five9 stockholders will receive 0.5533 shares of Class A common stock of Zoom for each share of Five9, it added.

Based on the July 16 closing share price of Zoom Class A common stock, this represents a price of $200.28 (roughly Rs. 14,970) for each share of Five9 common stock, and an implied deal value of about $14.7 billion (roughly Rs. 1,09,890 crores).

Shares in Five9 finished up 0.6 percent at $177.60 (roughly Rs. 13,270) on Friday, while Zoom rose 1.4 percent at $361.97 (roughly Rs. 27,060), valuing the company at around $106 billion (roughly Rs. 7,92,450 crores).

Zoom rose 45 percent over the past year, as conferencing platforms, which also include Cisco’s Webex and Microsoft Teams, have seen a surge in usage due to the coronavirus pandemic that has spurred a seismic shift to online working, learning and socialising.

Global spending on cloud-based conferencing is forecast to reach $5.41 billion (roughly Rs. 40,440 crores) this year, up from $5.02 billion (roughly Rs. 37,530 crores) in 2020, according to tech consultancy Gartner. It does not track market share, but analysts cite Zoom and Cisco as the leaders.

And the rest of them are made by Bruce Miller, Amy Sherman-Palladino, David Farr, Greg Daniels, Michael Schur, Sudip Sharma, Barry Jenkins, Noah Hawley, Alex Gibney, Steven Moffat, Robert and Michelle King, and Edgar Wright.

Of course, this list cannot possibly cover everything. And that’s why we have separate recommendations for some select genres that you should also check out.

The Best Drama and Comedy-Drama Series on Amazon Prime Video

  1. Coupling (2000 – 2004)

Steven Moffat’s early 2000s sitcom about six friends — three men and three women — discussing dating, sexual adventures, and all kinds of mishaps went beyond gender stereotypes and kept the laughs coming thanks to eccentric characteristics and plots. Consistently great throughout.

  2. Deutschland 83, 86, and 89 (2015 – 2020)

Set in 1983 and 1986 either side of the Iron Curtain, an exploration of life in both West and East Germany through the viewpoint of an undercover spy, who navigates love, family, and secrets. Third season, titled Deutschland 89, not available in India yet. An Amazon original.

  3. The Expanse (2015 – Present)

Hundreds of years in the future, a mankind that has colonised the Solar System is at the brink of a war and it’s up to a crew of different origins — Earth, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt — to expose the greatest conspiracy of all. An Amazon original. A slow start before hitting its peak in season four.

  4. Fargo (2014 – Present)

The Coen brothers’ acclaimed film of the same name is the inspiration for this black comedy/crime anthology series from Noah Hawley, featuring quirky characters across different eras dealing with deception, intrigue and murder amidst the cold of the American Midwest. The first three seasons — led by Martin Freeman, Kirsten Dunst, and Ewan McGregor — are the highlights.

  5. Fleabag (2016 – 2019)

Phoebe Waller-Bridge created and starred in this comedy-drama out of her one-woman play, about a young, sexually-liberated, dry-witted irritable woman who navigates modern life in London while coming to terms with a recent tragedy. Winner of several Emmys, with Waller-Bridge picking up best series, actress, and writing. An Amazon original, possibly its best.

  6. The Good Wife (2009 – 2016)

After a humiliating sex and corruption scandal puts her husband behind bars, his wife — a former state’s attorney — must return to work to provide for her family, while battling the unwanted spotlight. Known for its unique legal cases, terrific performances, and delivering consistently on all fronts throughout its long seven-season cable run.

  7. The Handmaid’s Tale (2017 – Present)

Elisabeth Moss stars in the lead of this prescient and unflinching adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s dystopian classic novel, set in a world where a totalitarian military dictatorship has overthrown the US government and subjugates women in the name of declining fertility rates. Two great seasons followed by a dip in the third, and a major fall in the fourth.

  8. Killing Eve (2018 – Present)

An off-the-books MI6 agent (Sandra Oh) and a psychopathic skilled assassin (Jodie Comer) are dangerously mutually obsessed with each other in this black comedy-drama based on Luke Jennings’ Villanelle novel series. Both Oh and Comer have won multiple best actress awards, but the show’s writing has been unable to keep up with them as it has progressed.

  9. The Looming Tower (2018)

Lawrence Wright’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name is adapted into a ten-part miniseries, exploring how the clash and rivalry between the FBI and CIA in the early 2000s may have inadvertently led to America’s biggest tragedy, 9/11. Powerfully written and bolstered by great acting, including Jeff Daniels and Tahar Rahim, with a directing tone set by Alex Gibney. Exclusive to Amazon.

  10. Mad Men (2007 – 2015)

Set in 1960s New York, a slow-burn drama that offers a peek inside a fictional ad agency, focusing on one of its extremely talented executives (Jon Hamm) who’s bored by his simple personal life. It offered brilliantly crafted characters and a subversive, intelligent look at the American workplace, while never dropping in quality across seven seasons.

  11. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017 – Present)

Among Amazon’s best originals to date, the seemingly perfect life of a Jewish housewife (Rachel Brosnahan) in late 1950s New York City crumbles after her husband confesses he’s having an affair, which leads her to an unexpected discovery: she has a knack for stand-up comedy. Third season couldn’t match the heights of the first two.

marvelous mrs maisel the marvelous mrs maisel

  12. The Night Manager (2016)

Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman lead the way with strong performances in this six-episode miniseries adaptation of the 1993 John le Carré novel, about a former British soldier and luxury hotel manager (Hiddleston) who becomes an undercover operative to infiltrate the inner circle of an international arms dealer (Laurie).

  13. The Office (2005 – 2013)

This American remake of Ricky Gervais’ BBC sitcom mockumentary lasted far longer — 201 episodes over nine seasons — as it followed the quite-often inappropriate and awkwardly-hilarious lives of the employees (Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, and John Krasinski among them) of a suburban Pennsylvania paper company. Suffered in later seasons but regained form in the final season after the return of creator Greg Daniels.

  14. Paatal Lok (2020 – Present)

A struggling cop (Jaideep Ahlawat) is assigned the case of his career that involves the attempted murder of a high-profile journalist (Neeraj Kabi), but his off-the-books investigation reveals it might not be as straightforward. A second-rate police procedural, a first-rate examination of India’s deep-rooted socio-political problems. Anushka Sharma is an executive producer. An Amazon original.

  15. Parks and Recreation (2009 – 2015)

Amy Poehler starred as an always-optimistic public official in an Indiana town’s parks department for seven seasons, surrounded by an ensemble cast as eccentric as the next one. Co-created by Daniels (The Office) and Michael Schur, the show made adjustments after a poorly-received debut season and never looked back, as it blossomed into one of the best sitcoms of this century.

  16. Ramy (2019 – Present)

An American-born Muslim (Ramy Youssef, also co-creator) in suburban New Jersey grapples with the dual identity challenges of just that, as he’s perpetually caught between the traditions and values of his Egyptian heritage, and the live-in-the-moment ambitions of his millennial peers. Youssef won the Golden Globe for best actor in 2020. First season is marginally better than the second.

  17. Spaced (1999 – 2001)

Before they gave us the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg directed and co-created, respectively, this sitcom about the misadventures of two twenty-something London strangers (Pegg and Jessica Stevenson, fellow co-creator) who pose as a married couple to get a flat in the English capital. Season two is more creative than the first one.

  18. The Underground Railroad (2021)

Oscar winner Barry Jenkins — he directed all 10 episodes — is behind this miniseries adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name, about an alternate-history 19th-century southern USA where a literal railroad helps African-Americans escape to safe harbours. It follows a young enslaved woman (Thuso Mbedu) and the slave catcher (Joel Edgerton) in pursuit.

    underground railroad the underground railroad

  19. Yes Minister (1980 – 1984)

Together with its 1986-88 sequel — Yes, Prime Minister — the two short-lived British series are reigning kings of the political satire, following a newly-appointed department minister struggling to carry out reforms and later, his unexpected elevation to the highest office in the land. Never a low point in this beloved firing-on-all-cylinders hit.

The Best TV Series on Amazon Prime Video

  1. The Affair (2014 – 2019)

A schoolteacher and budding novelist (Dominic West) begins an extramarital affair with a young waitress (Ruth Wilson) trying to piece together her life in this sombre drama, which delivered two strong seasons of deep and psychological observation before a slight dip brought by plot struggles in the third season. Recovered marginally for fifth and final season.

  2. Downton Abbey (2010 – 2015)

A post-Edwardian era period drama set in the English countryside, dealing with the aristocratic Crawley family and their domestic servants, and how the great events of the 1910s and 1920s had an effect on their lives and the British social hierarchy. Went through a dip in quality in the middle to late years but recovered for the final season. The follow-up 2019 movie is on Apple TV and Google Play.

  3. The Good Fight (2017 – Present)

A spin-off sequel to the critically-acclaimed The Good Wife follows Diane Lockhart (Christine Baranski) after she’s forced out of the law firm where she was a partner, and has to join a high-profile law firm in Chicago. The legal/political drama has more than held its own unlike most spin-offs, and has been praised for its examination of topical social issues.

  4. House (2004 – 2012)

For eight long years, Hugh Laurie played the misanthropic and unconventional titular doctor who despite reliance on pain medication and a cane — it actually added to his acerbic personality — led a team at a fictional New Jersey hospital, and made great use of his out-of-the-box thinking and instincts to diagnose patients.

  5. Laakhon Mein Ek (2017 – Present)

Biswa Kalyan Rath’s anthology series offers a look at unfortunate souls — a teenager stuck at an engineering coaching institute, or a young doctor posted to a rural cataract camp — fighting against prejudices, the system, and more. And generally failing. Exclusive to Amazon.

  6. Malgudi Days (1987 – 1988)

R.K. Narayanan’s collection of short stories about different faces of life in a fictional South India town are selectively adapted for the screen, thanks to his cartoonist brother R.K. Laxman, actor-director Shankar Nag, and producer T.S. Narasimhan.

  7. Mozart in the Jungle (2014 – 2018)

Inspired by oboist Blair Tindall’s 2005 memoir, this four-season long comedy-drama centred on an ambitious oboist (Lola Kirke) who develops a strong bond with the new conductor (Gael García Bernal) of a fictional New York symphony orchestra, with escapades in Mexico and Italy across seasons. An Amazon original.

  8. Queen Sugar (2016 – Present)

Ava DuVernay and Oprah came together to create this drama based on Natalie Baszile’s 2014 novel, about the lives of the estranged Bordelon siblings who move back to Louisiana after their father’s death to run the family’s struggling sugarcane farm. A tendency to cater to tropes and archetypes, but there’s no denying its political and viewing power.

  9. Shameless (2011 – 2021)

Based on the long-running hit UK series also from creator Paul Abbott, the American remake — all wrapped up after eleven seasons — is set in the south side of Chicago and centres on a perpetually-drunk single father of six with the children learning to take care of themselves. Several stumbles in latter years.

  10. This Is Us (2016 – Present)

This heartstrings-tugging family drama jumps through time to depict the lives of three siblings (Sterling K. Brown among them) and their parents, who seem to be mysteriously linked to each other in ways beyond their shared birthday. The fifth season is not on Prime Video; use Disney+ Hotstar for that instead.

  11. Transparent (2014 – 2019)

A dysfunctional Los Angeles family finds their past and future unravelling following an admission from the elderly father (Jeffrey Tambor) that he identifies as a woman. Winner of several awards including the Golden Globe for best series for its poignancy and empathy. Finale was middling though. Tambor was fired after four seasons over sexual harassment allegations. An Amazon original.

  12. Undone (2019 – Present)

From the makers of BoJack Horseman, a more life-like animated series about a 28-year-old woman (Rosa Salazar) who discovers she has a new relationship with time after getting into a car accident, and then uses that to solve the mystery of her father’s (Bob Odenkirk) death. But her exploits put her relationships and health in serious jeopardy. An Amazon original.

  13. A Very English Scandal (2018)

Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw lead the three-part first season based on a true story and John Preston’s book of the same name, following the rise of British Member of Parliament Jeremy Thorpe (Grant) and the scandal that would end his life, involving the attempted murder of his ex-gay lover (Whishaw). WhatsApp Now Lets You Join a Ongoing Group Call After It Began
WhatsApp Now Lets You Join a Ongoing Group Call After It Began

WhatsApp on Monday started rolling out joinable group calls to let users join a group video or voice call after it’s started and was missed initially. This will help users join a group call even if they initially miss a call when their phone rings. The update also brings an easy way to let you drop-off and rejoin a group WhatsApp call — as long as the call is still ongoing. Up until now, WhatsApp users were not given a native option to join a group call. However, participants in an active call could add members during a voice or video call on the platform.

Joinable calls reduce the burden of answering a group call as it starts and bring the spontaneity and ease of in-person conversations to group calling on WhatsApp, the Facebook-owned company said in a blog post.

How to join a missed group call on WhatsApp

You will see a Tap to join option in the call log on WhatsApp to join an ongoing group call even if it was missed originally. All you need to do is to just hit that option to join the call.

WhatsApp has also created a new call info screen that will allow users to see who all have been invited for the conversation but not yet joined. You can also look at the active participants of the call from the call info screen instead of getting their details after joining the call. Furthermore, the call info screen has an Ignore button to let you ignore a call and join it later from the Calls tab in WhatsApp.

Last week, WhatsApp was spotted testing joinable calls on the platform. WhatsApp for iOS beta version 2.21.140.11 carried the new experience for iPhone users. It also included the call screen that looked similar to Apple’s FaceTime interface.

Shortly after the iOS release, WhatsApp brought joinable calls to beta testers on Android. The overall experience looks similar on both iOS and Android versions.

WhatsApp has not provided exact details on when you’ll get joinable calls on your device. However, since the update has started rolling out, it should arrive on the latest versions of WhatsApp for Android and iOS soon.

In 2018, WhatsApp introduced group calling to its platform to allow users to communicate with multiple users simultaneously. The COVID-19 pandemic increased the adoption of group calls among users due to social distancing guidelines. That growth pushed WhatsApp to increase group calling from four to up to eight members at once.

Apple Accused of Slowing Down iPhones After Recent iOS Updates
Apple Accused of Slowing Down iPhones After Recent iOS Updates

Apple has been accused of slowing down several iPhone models after its most recent few updates. The Spain Consumer Protection Organization has sent a letter to Apple accusing the company of slowing down old phones like the iPhone 8 and iPhone XS, but also the iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 after recent updates. The updates mentioned in the letter are specifically iOS 14.5, 14.5.1, and iOS 14.6 updates. The letter accuses Apple of purposefully slowing down iPhones and asks the company to compensate affected consumers.

Spanish media iPhoneros first reported that the Spain Consumer Protection Organization (OCU) had sent the letter to Apple. The letter is intended to establish dialogue with Apple and look for a way to compensate affected consumers. If Apple does not respond with a satisfactory response, OCU has reportedly threatened to file a lawsuit.

“The letter sent aims to establish a dialogue with Apple to find a way to compensate its consumers. Whether Apple does not respond properly, other actions could be taken in the national courts to enforce consumer right,” OCU writes in the letter. While the letter does not detail specific user complaints, it alleges that iOS 14.5, 14.5.1, and 14.6 updates have significantly damaged consumer devices, causing their processing speed to drop dramatically and the battery to drain faster. The letter claims that numerous media outlets, both tech and non-tech, have reported about this. Altroconsumo, Deco Proteste, and Test-Achats have also participated in the letter sent by OCU.

Last month, iPhone users reported of severe battery drain issues after updating to version iOS 14.6. One iPhone user claimed that his device drained by a massive 70 percent overnight. An iPhone 12 user complained that their phone’s battery went up to only 30 percent even after keeping it on charging overnight and that it “keeps on draining”.

Ola Receives Over 1 Lakh Pre-Booking for Its Electric Scooter in 24 Hours
Ola Receives Over 1 Lakh Pre-Booking for Its Electric Scooter in 24 Hours

Ola Electric Mobility received over one lakh pre-bookings for its electric scooter — Ola Scooter —within the first 24 hours of reservations being opened, Ola Group Chairman and CEO Bhavish Aggarwal has announced. The ride-hailing company had opened reservations for its electric scooter on the evening of July 15. The scooters will be manufactured at Ola’s two-wheeler factory in Tamil Nadu. Ola promises that the scooters can be “charged anywhere” using the Ola Hypercharger network. Customers can reserve the scooter by making a refundable deposit of Rs. 499. The company has said that those who reserve will get priority delivery.

Ola said that the 100,000 reservations within the first 24 hours has made it the most pre-booked scooter in the world. “Huge thanks to the 100,000+ revolutionaries who’ve joined us and reserved their scooter,” Aggarwal tweeted following the great response to the electric scooter’s launch.

The Ola Scooter is said to have a range of 75 kilometres. The company claims its electric two-wheeler can be fully charged in 18 minutes using its Ola Hypercharger. The scooter can also be charged at home using any 5A socket.

Ola Electric Mobility had unveiled plans to build a nationwide charging network of the Ola Hypercharger in April. Ola had said the Hypercharger Network will be the world’s largest, densest two-wheeler charging system, comprising 100,000 high-speed charging points in more than 400 Indian cities.

How to reserve an Ola Scooter

Interested buyers can pre-book an Ola scooter at olaelectric.com. All they need to do is verify their phone number via OTP and pay a booking amount of Rs. 499. People can also reserve multiple scooters if they wished to.

Ola has also answered some queries regarding the scooter reservations on its website. The reservation amount is completely refundable. Upon cancellation, the refund will be made within 7-10 working days. Once your reservation is successful, the company will send you the order ID and other details via SMS or email.

Buyers will be able to choose colour and variant of the Ola Scooter at a later stage. As mentioned, the company has not announced the launch date of the scooters yet. Ola has said its Ola Scooter will be “competitively priced”.

The Bengaluru based ride-hailing company had first announced its plans to set up an electric scooters’ factory — it now calls Ola Futurefactory — at Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu in December 2020, with an initial investment of Rs. 2,400 crores. The plant was expected to have an initial annual production capacity of two million scooters and create nearly 10,000 jobs. As per Ola’s official website, Futurefactory will be the world’s largest two-wheeler factory.

CNN unveils CNN+ streaming service, slated for 2022
CNN unveils CNN+ streaming service, slated for 2022

CNN’s long-rumored CNN+ streaming service finally became official Monday, with the storied cable news network announcing that the new, standalone service is slated to launch in the first quarter of next year.

CNN didn’t reveal many specifics in Monday’s announcement; for example, it didn’t announce any new programming that would kick off the service, nor did it say how much it would charge for a subscription.

That said, CNN confirmed that CNN+ will offer “original, live, on demand and interactive programming” that is “separate and distinct” from CNN’s existing cable channels—in other words, don’t expect a simulcast of CNN’s flagship cable networks.

While CNN didn’t outline any new shows that would debut on CNN+—those will be “unveiled later this year”—it did promise that the “standalone direct-to-consumer” service would arrive with prior seasons of such CNN programs as Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, This is Life with Lisa Ling, and United Shades of America with W. Kamau Bell.

Besides new and upcoming on-demand shows, CNN+ will be serving up between eight and 12 hours of live programming, including “topical deep dives” and “several new faces.”

CNN is calling CNN+ an “additive” service that “complements” existing CNN networks and will cater to “CNN superfans.”

As such, the current CNN app isn’t going away. Instead, the app will eventually offer CNN+ content as well as live feeds of CNN, CNN International, HLN, and CNN en Español. Those live feeds, however, will only be available for cable and pay TV subscribers.

The launch of CNN+ has been rumored for months, but the chatter began picking up steam in recent weeks, particularly after AT&T CEO John Stanley spilled the beans in mid-June. AT&T currently owns CNN parent WarnerMedia, although AT&T recently announced plans to spin WarnerMedia off into a new company.

Intel document backs up Windows 11 October release date rumors
Intel document backs up Windows 11 October release date rumors

Intel document backs up Windows 11 October release date rumors

It is far from uncommon for software companies to be a little vague when it comes to releases dates. By keeping their cards close to their chest, any delays in launches can be overlooked on the basis that if no release date has been announced, it can’t be missed.

And so with Windows 11. When Microsoft announced the upcoming operating system we were simply told that it would be ready in time for the holiday season. However, there have been hints, rumors and suggestions that Windows 11 will launch in October, and this has been further hinted at by documentation from Intel.

See also:

Over the weekend we wrote about the release of Windows 11-compatible graphics drivers from Intel. Glancing at the release notes for these drivers, there is reference not only to Windows 11, but also to its release month.

Just as Windows 10 version 2004 is also referred to in the release notes as the May 2020 Update and Windows 20H1, so Windows 11 is referred to as “October 2021 Update”.

Take a look in the OS Reference section of the release notes for Intel Graphics – Windows DCH Drivers:

Supported OS versions

OS Reference:

  • Microsoft Windows® 10-64 – October 2018 Updated (1809)(RS5)
  • Microsoft Windows 10-64 – May 2019 Update (1903)(19H1)
  • Microsoft Windows 10-64 – November 2019 Update (1909)(19H2)
  • Microsoft Windows 10-64 – May 2020 Update (2004)(20H1)
  • Microsoft Windows 10-64 – October 2020 Update (20H2)
  • Microsoft Windows 10-64 – May 2021 Update (21H1)
  • Microsoft Windows 11 – October 2021 Update

This is, of course, neither official, nor definite confirmation that October is the month in which Windows 11 will be released… but it is yet more evidence that backs up this idea.

Google Duo Is Getting a Floating ‘New Call’ Button With Redesigned UI

Google Duo will soon get a home screen redesign with a ‘New Call’ button. The new button is said to help make calls more easily. The ‘New Call’ button will also let users call their Assistant “Home” device. The new home screen user interface (UI) still retains the search bar at the top of the screen while the contacts are displayed in a new format along with the ‘New Call’ button. Google said the redesign would reach users in the coming few weeks.

The new feature within the redesigned UI for Google Duo was announced through a post on the Google Duo Help webpage. The post mentions that this is one of the highly requested additions to the video calling app from Google. The company says the new blue-coloured floating action button (FAB) for ‘New Call’ will let users start a new call on the app, create a group, see groups and contact lists, and call your “home” device.

The redesigned UI also removes a few functionalities that were available previously. Users will now be able to ‘Send Messages’ by clicking on the contact or group and subsequently clicking on the Message button. Users can ‘Create Groups’ by tapping on the ‘New Call’ FAB and then clicking on the Create group link. Google Duo users will also be able to ‘See Contacts and Existing Groups’ by either searching for them or via the ‘New Call’ FAB. To ‘Invite Contacts’, users will have to tap the ‘New Call’ FAB and search for the contact either via the search bar or through the contacts list.

Google Duo’s ‘New Call’ FAB is expected to roll out in a few weeks. The platform to first receive the update is not specified, however, it is expected to be rolled out to both Android and iOS users.

For the past year, Google has been focussing more on Google Meet and has even added various filters and effects that were earlier exclusive to Google Duo. The coming update is the first for Google Duo in almost a year, as the last update that added the ability to conduct Google Duo video calls on Android TV came in August last year.
