There are many things the COVID-19 pandemic has helped bring into the mainstream, including an accelerated adoption of technology by individuals and enterprises. More people today appear interested in leveraging technology to work from home. Enterprises, too, are adopting or trying new technologies for a smooth transition. It seems the day is not far when companies start hiring and training their employees in virtual reality (VR). As ambitious as it may sound, it is very much feasible. For instance, Accenture, the multinational IT services and consulting firm, has deployed the largest number of VR headsets by any company.

During an interview with Fortune, Accenture CEO Julie Sweet revealed the immersive technology acquisition, saying the company has acquired 60,000 Oculus headsets for onboarding and training new employees. But Accenture is only the latest in a line of other giants such as Walmart and Bank of America in embracing the technology.

“It’s (VR) a great way to learn about Accenture in a more engaging fashion but have an experience with people you don’t get to be in a room with going through your new joiner training,” Julie Sweet said.

Established in 2001, Accenture has grown to become one of the world’s largest employers. More than 620,000 people work at its offices worldwide. Accenture hired 54,000 employees in the last quarter.

Why is VR an important development during onboarding/ hiring? It’s because new hires need to understand and familiarize themselves with the company’s policies and culture and their position in the bigger setup. An effective onboarding process improves the retention rate of a company significantly.

The VR headsets help in these areas. They have become a serious tool for learning and can be used in dangerous, expensive, and difficult scenarios, and also help in developing soft skills like empathy. VR has the potential to impact how we learn, teach, and train.

MacBook Pro 2021 Models Battery Capacities, Repairability Revealed via iFixit Teardown

MacBook Pro 2021 models were unveiled by Apple a few weeks ago at a dedicated event. The new 14-inch and 16-inch Pro models are powered by the M1 Pro and M1 Max processors. They have let go of the Touch Bar and introduced a notch on the display. iFixit has now performed a teardown on these new MacBook Pro models to reveal the internals and changes that Apple has introduced since the previous generation. The teardown also reveals the battery capacity of the two MacBook Pro models.

iFixit’s detailed teardown reveals that the MacBook Pro 16-inch model comes with a 99.6Whr battery whereas the 14-inch MacBook Pro has a smaller 69.6Whr battery. The 2019 16-inch MacBook Pro model packs a slightly bigger 99.8Whr battery, whereas the M1 MacBook Pro battery from last year clocked at 58.2Whr, significantly smaller than the 14-inch MacBook Pro model unveiled this year. In addition, the teardown reveals that the batteries are no longer glued to the chassis. Instead, they are now removable with easy adhesive pull tabs. iFixit also confirms that battery replacements are fully functional and warning-free.

Apple has made several improvements keeping repair in mind, with keeping the battery easily removable and the back being screwed in place, instead of adhesive. The removal of the Touch Bar has given Apple the opportunity to make better use of the interior space. iFixit reports that the cable connecting the display has more slack and display replacements have also been streamlined. It is reported to come with fewer fussy screws, springs, and cables to dispatch, and no more separate display board to extract.

Of course, the new MacBook Pro 2021 teardown reveals that there is no room for upgrading the RAM in the future and buyers are recommended to buy the most preferred option up front. Ports are said to be highly modular, include the MagSafe port that can be easily swapped. iFixit warns that the SD card reader and HDMI port are soldered to the logic board and any damage to them means either a pricey repair, or a full board replacement.

Overall, iFixit gives a reparability score of 4 out of 10 to the new MacBook Pro models. The full teardown video can be seen below.

Amazon Announces Alexa Users Will No Longer Enjoy Email Access

Amazon has announced that Alexa users will no longer get email access beginning next week. Users will not be able to link their Gmail or Microsoft accounts anymore – there is no mention of other email service providers – and any linked account will also be automatically unlinked. Amazon mentions users will not be able to browse or manage emails once the functionality is removed. Amazon has also disabled the email package tracking from retailers apart from Amazon, but users can still track their Amazon deliveries through Alexa.

Through a press release, Amazon announced that Alexa customers will no longer be able to access their Gmail or Microsoft email accounts from Monday, November 8. The e-commerce giant didn’t mention if other email service providers will also be subjected to the change in functionality. Users will not be able to browse or manage their emails using the voice-assistant.

Amazon also mentioned that email routines and email notifications support will also be discontinued on Alexa. Furthermore, the voice assistant will no longer support email package tracking, for packages arriving from retailers outside of Amazon. However, users can still track packages of orders placed on Amazon. Asking “Alexa, where’s my stuff?” will notify users about their Amazon deliveries.

Users are not required to take any action for this change in the functionality of Alexa. Amazon did mention that if users have synced a calendar to Alexa, it will continue to function.

In August, Amazon announced that users will be able to configure the voice of Amitabh Bachchan for Alexa at an introductory price of Rs. 149 (MRP Rs. 299) per year. By saying, “Alexa, introduce me to Amitabh Bachchan” will let users purchase the voice pack for Amazon’s voice assistant. This feature was first introduced in 2019 in the US with the voice of actor and producer Samuel L. Jackson.

NASA Shares Image of Helix Nebula, a Giant Eye in Sky

NASA has shared a stunning image of a giant eye-shaped nebula that is among the brightest and closest to Earth. The image, captured by the agency’s Spitzer Space Telescope, showed a deep vacuum surrounded by a sparkling cloud of dust and gas. The dust and gas are spread over a two-light-year diameter around a central white dwarf. The dust makes this central part gleam with red shades. This astronomical formation is known as the Helix Nebula, which is 700 light-years away from Earth, located in the Aquarius constellation.

When a star like the Sun runs out of fuel, it expands and its outer layers puff off, and then the core of the star shrinks. This phase is known as a “planetary nebula,” said NASA. Scientists expect our Sun to experience this phase in about 5 billion years.

The agency said the star likely ejected the nebular material — shown in the image — many thousands of years ago. The dust could be generated by collisions inside a reservoir of objects, like in our own solar system’s Kuiper Belt or cometary Oort cloud. The Helix Nebula can be readily observed on a clear, moonless night with binoculars.

“It is so amazing,” commented an Instagram user. Referring to its appearance like a giant eye in space, another said, “The Helix Nebula was nicknamed the Eye of God or God’s”. The nickname started appearing after NASA released an image of it taken by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2002. The infrared image taken by the Spitzer Space Telescope followed in 2007.

NASA has asked space enthusiasts to “keep an eye out” as it highlights some of the most favourite nebulae through this month on its Instagram account.

Xiaomi May Not Launch Redmi K40S, Redmi K50 Series in Development

Xiaomi was rumoured to launch Xiaomi 11T as Redmi K40S in the Chinese market. Now, fresh leaks suggest that the Redmi K50 series is in the pipeline as the next flagship phone from the brand, instead of Redmi K40S. The Redmi K50 series is said to debut in line with the Redmi K30 series and Redmi K40 series smartphones. The Redmi K50 series is said to comprise the vanilla Redmi K50, Redmi K50 Pro, and the top-end Redmi K50 Pro+.

Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing reportedly denied the launch of Redmi K40S. He has reportedly confirmed to MyDrivers that there won’t be Redmi K40S, and the company is working on the Redmi K50 lineup. Separately, known tipster Digital Chat Station posted on Weibo that Redmi K40S hasn’t appeared at Chinese certification sites, which points to cancellation of the handset. Further, the tipster hinted about the launch of the Xiaomi 12 lineup and Redmi K50 series. He added that the upcoming smartphones will come with Snapdragon 870 chipset.

As per a 91Mobiles report, the purported Redmi K50 series will include the standard Redmi K50, Redmi K50 Pro, and the top-end Redmi K50 Pro+ models. The upcoming series will be launched later this year or early next year in China. The smartphones are reported to come with an in-display fingerprint sensor. As per the report, two smartphones under the Redmi K50 series will feature the Snapdragon 778G chipset. Redmi K50 and the Redmi K50 Pro are said to have Snapdragon 870 SoC. The Redmi K50 Pro+ variant is said to pack Snapdragon 898 SoC and carries 120W fast charging support.

Redmi K50 is reported to feature a 48-megapixel rear primary sensor, while Redmi K50 Pro is said to offer a 50-megapixel main sensor. Redmi K50 Pro+ is said to feature a 108-megapixel primary rear sensor. The Redmi Pro+ model is also reported to have 120W fast charging support. Other variants are said to offer a maximum of 100W fast charging support.

Redmi K30S was launched in October 2020 as a rebadged variant of Mi 10T. Likewise, Xiaomi 11T and Xiaomi 11T Pro were unveiled in the global market in September this year.

Grammys to Honour Music Biggies with Yearly NFT Series

Mordenising the process with a crypto-twist, the Grammy Awards have announced three yearly series of non-fungible tokens (NFTs). These digital collectibles will be inspired by award winners and nominees from the music industry. These NFTs will mark the 64th, 65th, and 66th editions of the awards. The Grammys have partnered NFT platform OneOff for three years to facilitate the NFT sale and purchase.

The award body, parented by the California, US-based Recording Academy, announced the development on Twitter while revealing details of its new partnership with OneOff. The NFT platform is built on the energy-saving Tezos blockchain and bridges the gap between music fans and their favourite artists.

The responses around the post are brimming with excitement from NFT enthusiasts.

“The NFTs will be released as collectibles and experiences celebrating the Grammy Awards, nominees and recipients, including tokens designed by world-famous crypto artists using the iconic Grammy Award itself,” an official statement from the Recording Academy said.

Without revealing any financial details, the Grammys have also revealed that a portion of the NFT proceeds will be deposited in the scholarship fund of the Recording Academy.

Commenting on its partnership with the Grammys, the founding members of OneOf said, “if used to their full potential, NFTs will empower the music industry in a way few other technologies ever have”.

As of now, no leaked glimpses or teasers of the NFTs have surfaced on social media.

Meanwhile, several other brands are also entering into the NFT space after the sales volume of these digital collectibles surged to $10.7 billion (roughly Rs. 79,820 crore) earlier last month, a report by DappRadar said.

Recently, McDonald’s also announced a 10-piece limited edition NFT collection celebrating the 40th anniversary of its McRib sandwich.

AI-Based Solutions Promise to Mitigate the Climate Change Crisis

The help of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been deployed by tech firms and NGOs worldwide to fight the climate change crisis. Gadgets 360 caught up with some, including the team at Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society (SEEDS) — a New Delhi-based NGO — and IBM India, to talk about their efforts to apply tech to mitigate the climate crisis.

Although big tech companies are now moving towards measures to become more sustainable (Apple and Facebook have pledged to be carbon neutral by the end of the decade), a lot remains to be done, and this is one of the areas where artificial intelligence is making an impact.

With the UN Climate Change Conference that began in Glasgow on October 31, the discourse on the global climate change crisis is back in the spotlight. The 26th edition of the Conferences of the Parties (COP26) will go on till November 14 and will see global leaders, academic experts, and activists gathering to discuss how to contain the rise in global temperatures.

But while world leaders develop policies and long-term plans, we spoke to companies innovating on the ground to see how they can help contribute to change.

Evading disasters through Sunny Lives

SEEDS developed Sunny Lives, an AI-powered disaster impact model that uses high-resolution satellite imagery to assess the risks of hazard at a hyper-local level. The Sunny Lives project has been executed in partnership with Microsoft and technology partner Gramener, and is being supported under Microsoft’s global programme ‘Artificial Intelligence for Humanitarian Action’.

Mridula Garg, who is leading the Sunny Lives project at SEEDS said that Sunny Lives detects building footprints and then assigns them relative risk scores as values from 1 to 5. “The model takes into account the type of hazard say floods or heat waves, analyses the exposure based on geographic parameters such as slope and vegetation, and uses building classification as a proxy for the socio-economic vulnerability of the inhabitants. The relative risk score assigned after detecting the building footprints is used by our disaster response teams for prioritising families at highest risk,” Garg said.

During the application for an impending cyclone, satellite imagery is procured for Areas of Interest that are selected based on the cyclone’s predicted path issued by the IMD. The Sunny Lives AI Model is then run for these areas to generate the risk scores.

It was clear to the team at SEEDS that the type of building played a significant role in predicting the effect of a disaster on it. For example, a concrete house and a thatched roof dwelling would face a difference in impact from a cyclone even when they are located next to each other. The model was developed from the desire to code this knowledge so that disaster risk assessment could be scaled widely.

Microsoft’s data science team and tech partner Gramener used machine learning to automate the process of identifying dwellings and their types. Satellite images of low-income, highly dense and vulnerable settlements in India were used to identify 7 different categories of dwellings including tarpaulin roofs, metal sheet roofs, double side sloping tiled roofs etc.

The AI model was trained on 15,000 buildings from low-income, highly dense, and vulnerable settlements of Puri and Mumbai. The 15,000 buildings were tagged to build the training dataset for the AI inundation model. A similar exercise is now being done for the cities of Dehradun and Gangtok as the model is being adapted for assessing earthquake risks.

Sunny Lives was deployed at a scale for the first time during cyclone Yaas in May 2021. The model was run for Puri in Odisha, based on which SEEDS reached out to over 1,000 families that were identified as high-risk. Advisories were shared which outlined the steps to be taken in case of evacuation and also suggested low-cost measures to reduce

Garg said that post-disaster impact surveys highlighted that 97 percent of the families found the information useful and were able to reduce losses and take preemptive measures during the cyclone. “In addition, we have recently concluded around 1,500 ground truthing surveys in Puri which will help analyse and further improve the accuracy of the model,” said Garg.

An AI model like Sunny Lives provides an unending possibility to scale across urban geographies and is being adapted for multiple hazards. Deploying the model at scale through collaborations is the next key focus for SEEDS. “We have gathered a lot of interest from several state government authorities and are reaching out to many more. Our vision is to integrate the use of the model for climate change adaptation and disaster management in a way that the hyper-local risk of the communities is understood and pathways for their protection and resilience are put into practice,” Garg said.

Tech firms’ solution to counting CO2

Major companies around the globe have pledged to stop climate change. These companies are facing a challenge with quantifying their emissions and understanding the best way to mitigate the climate change crisis. In response to this, several tech firms have come up with solutions to help businesses prepare for and respond to climate risks.

Salesforce’s team built the Salesforce Sustainability Cloud with a mission to track emissions. The Sustainability Cloud is priced at $4,000 (roughly Rs. 3 lakh) a month. Microsoft is also previewing a tool for calculating emissions called Microsoft Cloud for Sustainability. They are aiming to make it available by mid-2022.

IBM also recently brought out a suite of environmental intelligence software that uses AI to help organisations prepare for and respond to climate risks. The team from IBM said that the suite will help businesses which have deployed it to more easily assess their impact on the planet, and reduce the complexity of regulatory compliance and reporting.

“We wanted to make it easier for companies to both manage and to know about the risk affecting their business operations and to act differently in order to minimise the risks,” said Gargi Dasgupta, Director, IBM Research, India.

The suite puts existing weather data from various sources to use to collect and compile data. IBM said in its blog post that the suite is a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution designed to help organisations monitor for disruptive environmental conditions, predict the potential impacts of climate change, prioritise mitigation and response efforts, and measure and report on environmental initiatives. The IBM Environmental Intelligence Suite utilises the AI-driven innovations from IBM Research.

Shantanu Godbole, the technical lead of IBM’s global research team, said that while assessing how technology would impact climate change, they focused on two areas — mitigation and adaptation. “Mitigation works towards helping organisations meet their net zero carbon emission goals, optimisation of their emissions, and making their business processes more sustainable,” he said.

Godbole added that the focus of their team in terms of adaptation was to help businesses adapt to extreme weather conditions. “Weather forecasting is done for upto one to two weeks into the future. No data is available on the scale of six months or three years down the line. That is a horizon that is an important opportunity area from a planning and decision making perspective. We feel enterprises need to have technology to help make decisions at those times,” Godbole said.

iOS 15.1 Includes Unpatched ‘Zero-Day’ Security Flaws, Researcher Says

iOS 15.1 is resulting in issues including unresponsive user interface and irregular battery life for some iPhone users, according to a report. The iOS update was released last week to address some of the issues surfacing on earlier iOS versions. It also introduced features including SharePlay support. Alongside the issues being faced by some users, a security researcher has claimed that the iOS 15.1 update includes two unpatched ‘zero-day’ vulnerabilities despite informing Apple about their existence a few months back.

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes of ZDNet reports that a number of users who have updated their iPhone to iOS 15.1 are facing problems including unresponsive user interface along with lags in some areas and a very variable battery life. The iOS update is also said to have an annoying experience with Bluetooth headsets including the AirPods Pro.

The author also notes that the ‘Unlock With Apple Watch’ feature that Apple fixed in iOS 15.0.1 is still giving an unpleasant experience as it unlocks the iPhone when looking at the screen without wearing the mask. This is unlike the original purpose of the feature that was essentially to allow users to unlock their iPhone with an Apple Watch when wearing a face mask.

In some cases, Kingsley-Hughes also noticed that the iPhone in his pocket automatically gets unlocked through the Apple Watch.

Alongside the issues covered by Kingsley-Hughes, security researcher Denis Tokarev has tweeted to claim that iOS 15.1 includes two unpatched ‘zero-day’ vulnerabilities. These security issues have been in Apple’s knowledge for more than seven months, the researcher claimed.

Both the serious-looking vulnerabilities are said to allow apps including Facebook and TikTok to track and profile users and to gain access to sensitive user data, without receiving any explicit consent from the users.

Tokarev publicly disclosed the flaws through a detailed blog post in September after not receiving any formal response from Apple. Last month, he, however, apparently got the company’s commitment to fix the issues last month. Apple has not yet patched the reported flaws, though.

Interestingly, iOS 15.1 was the third iOS update and the ninth release in the series since the researcher first informed Apple about the existence of the security issues in March, as reported by Forbes.

Although Apple did not work on the issues reported by Tokarev, it did patch a few security loopholes in iOS 15.1 that was released alongside iPadOS 15.1. The patched issues are detailed on the security page.

Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro Teardown Videos Reveal Extensive Heat Dissipation

Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 6 phones have been put through extensive teardowns to reveal their internals and showcase their repairability. The teardowns were conducted by PBK Reviews and while the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro internals are almost the same, there are a few key differences that the videos highlight. The two phones are bundled with a lot of heat dissipation and the teardown showcases the mmWave layout as well. The videos focus mainly on the repairability of the two phones, and both the screen and fingerprint sensor worked fine after replacement.

PBK Reviews has posted two videos that detail the teardown of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Once both the phones are opened up, they both are covered in a large copper heat sink. There is also an aluminium mid-plate below for more heat dissipation that is connected to the chips with a thermal tape. The under-screen fingerprint sensor is also sported at the back of the screen. It is a thin sticker that takes up very little space. The proximity sensor and the under-display brightness are also spotted under the screen.

The videos reveal that the Pixel 6 Pro has the haptic motor at the bottom of the phone while the Pixel 6 has the haptic motor on top. It is also revealed that mmWave antenna is placed on the top edge of the Pixel 6 for regions and carriers that support it. For areas where there is no mmWave, that real estate is filled with a placeholder metal block. mmWave is said to enable high download speeds on 5G phones, but just putting in one is questionable. It is most likely to be blocked by the hand when in landscape mode and Qualcomm has even reportedly suggested that the signal will operate better if there are over four mmWave antennas integrated inside any phone. With just one mmWave antenna, placed in a poor fashion, it remains to be seen whether the Pixel 6 is able to ever catch fast speed connectivity, or not.

As for repairability, PBK Reviews reports that the USB Type-C port is soldered onto the motherboard making it difficult to repair. The video also reveals that everything inside is glued together, meaning that repair would lead to compromise on the phones’ water resistance. The video details that it didn’t face any issues while replacing the screen, but the fingerprint sensor replacement required them to run some calibration software and then the phone had to be factory reset.
