Green energy Cray supercomputer to power weather predictions

HPE is set to build a supercomputer for United Weather Centres (UWC-West). The supercomputer will be used in a collaboration between the Danish Meteorological Institute; the Icelandic Met Office; Met Éireann, Ireland’s national weather service; and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute, to help the weather services issue timely alerts and improve public services.

Bill Mannel, vice-president and general manager of high-performance computing (HPC) at HPE, said: “As European nations continue to face challenges with new, dynamic weather patterns caused by climate change, weather forecasters will need powerful HPC capabilities to evolve weather models and simulate vast amounts of complex data to unlock accurate, real-time forecasts.” 

According to HPE, the shared supercomputer will help the four meteorological services improve weather modelling to generate more detailed forecast updates and make predictions every hour.

The overall advanced performance will also support research into extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, heavy rain, flooding and snowstorms, which are more often triggered by climate change. This will help provide timely warnings to alert local governments and communities to prepare for severe conditions and protect human lives, livestock and property.

The system is being built to run a next-generation numerical weather prediction (NWP) model, called Harmonie-Arome, which has been developed under the Hirlam-Accord collaboration, a consortium of 26 national meteorological services across Europe and North Africa that is aimed at improving short-range weather predictions.

“Our countries have a long history of working together in weather forecasting – often the weather experienced in Ireland or Iceland today is the same weather experienced in Denmark and The Netherlands tomorrow,” said UWC-West chair Marianne Thyrring. “The UWC-West supercomputer is the first step in a powerful collaboration between weather services in Europe, and it is vital that we continue working closely together to improve our weather forecasts and understanding of how climate change will impact our countries.”

The HPE Cray system will feature what HPE describes as “powerful, end-to-end performance to speed time-to-predictions with higher resolution”. Based in an Icelandic Met Office datacentre facility, the supercomputer will be powered by local renewable energy. 

The supercomputer will be made up of two systems, one dedicated to operational weather forecasting, the other for broader weather and climate research, to harness complex atmospheric and oceanic data that helps model and simulate weather at a higher resolution.

It includes expanded storage to support and share complex workloads in modelling, simulation and artificial intelligence (AI) using the Cray ClusterStor E1000 storage system from HPE and HPE Data Management Framework. HPE Slingshot is to be used as a high-performance Ethernet fabric and HPE Performance Cluster Management for the systems management tool. The HPE Cray Programming Environment will be provided to support HPC application development.

The supercomputer is due to be installed in the second quarter of 2022 and expected to be operational by early 2023.

Government Invites Crypto Players to Discuss Impacts of Crypto Expansion

Government officials have invited top crypto stakeholders for a meeting. Several crypto-based companies including CoinSwitch Kuber, CoinDCX, WazirX, and Crypto Assets Council (BACC) among others will be part of the meeting. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance will be serving as host for the conference that is slated to be held on November 15. An official notice informing concerned parties about this meeting has been released by the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

“Hearing of views of Associations/ Industry experts on the subject ‘CryptoFinance: Opportunities and Challenges’,” has been listed as the agenda of this meeting on the official notice .pdf.

The political and industry biggies are expected to discuss at length, the kind of impact that cryptocurrencies can have on the Indian currency and overall economy, according to reports.

Complex history with crypto in India

Back in 2018, the Reserve Bank of India had imposed a ban on banks dealing with crypto businesses. 

Later in 2020, the Supreme Court revoked the clause.

India’s federal finance ministry has been working on ways to structure the crypto-space and has formed a new committee to find out if income made by cryptocurrency trading could be taxed.

Meanwhile, Indian finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman has been overseeing the draft formulation of the cryptocurrency bill which will be presented before the parliament later this year.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is also working on launching its official digital currency as a regulated “central bank digital currency (CBDC)” by the end of 2021.

While the status of cryptocurrency is a legal grey area, adoption remains high in the country. For now, India is among the fastest crypto-adopting countries in the world along with Vietnam and Pakistan.

As per a Chainalysis study, India ranks second on the Global Crypto Adoption Index.

Cambridge Quantum tackles rail optimisation for German operator

DB Netz, a subsidiary of German railway company Deutsche Bahn, is working in partnership with Cambridge Quantum to explore how quantum computers can improve the rescheduling of rail traffic. The project is exploring how new algorithms running on smaller-scale quantum computers can be used to optimise rail planning.

DB Netz is the service provider managing a rail infrastructure comprising nearly 33,300km. As part of a sector-wide digitisation strategy, Digitale Schiene Deutschland,  DB Netz recently combined Cambridge Quantum’s latest combinatorial optimisation algorithm Filtering Variational Quantum Eigensolver (F-VQE) with its own operations research expertise to re-optimise realistic train timetables after simulated delays.

The collaboration is looking at how to apply Noisy Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) processors to solve real-world problems in the transport and logistics sector.

F-VQE uses a technique that enables combinatorial optimisation problems to run on smaller quantum systems. A simple example of combinatorial optimisation is the traveling salesman problem. Given the (x, y) coordinates of a finite number of different cities, combinatorial optimisation involves calculating the shortest possible path in which the salesman visits each city exactly once.

While a human can easily draw an optimal route for the travelling salesman to visit a handful of cities, this becomes impossible as the number of cities, and therefore the complexity, increases. It is this type of problem area that is well suited to quantum computing, and one that transportation, logistics and rail operators need to tackle.

F-VQE enables quantum circuits to be decomposed into smaller circuits and run using fewer qubits without losing quantum advantage. When Cambridge Quantum demonstrated F-VQE earlier this year, it said a 23-qubit problem was solved by using no more than six hardware qubits at a time. 

Michael Küpper, lead of capacity and traffic management system at Digitale Schiene Deutschland, said: “The collaboration with Cambridge Quantum is a perfect example of how Deutsche Bahn is working as a partner with industry providers and combining our relative expertise towards a goal neither side can achieve alone.

“By working with Cambridge Quantum, we have fine-tuned our research and development plans and taken the first steps in defining a future quantum-advantaged train timetabling system. We are excited to continue working with Cambridge Quantum to address some of the key challenges and contribute to the rapidly evolving field of NISQ quantum algorithm research.”

Moto G31 Alleged Renders Tip Triple Rear Cameras, Hole-Punch Display

Motorola Moto G31’s alleged renders have been leaked online, showing a hole-punch display and a triple rear camera setup. As per a report, the budget smartphone is expected to launch in two colour options and could come with a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The specifications of the Motorola phone, expected to be a successor to the Moto G30 which was launched earlier this year, were shared by a tipster last month. The handset has also been spotted on a National Communications Commission (NCC) listing in Taiwan.

Citing industry sources, 91Mobiles reported that the Moto G31 will debut in India in Black and Blue colour options. The publication has also shared a few renders that show the same colourways. However, the NCC listing suggested that Motorola may launch the handset in Black and Silver colour options. It also suggests that Moto G31 has XT2173-2 model number.

When it comes to design, the renders shared by 91Mobiles show that the phone has a centre-aligned hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera. The power button, volume rocker, and a dedicated Google Assistant button are on the right spine. Moto G31 is seen with a triple rear camera setup and there is “50MP” written on the module.

These details are in line with an image shared by tipster Anthony. The image shows a smartphone in Silver colour. The smartphone in the image has the same camera module with “50MP” and “Quad Pixel” text, and a similar button placement as shown in the renders shared by 91Mobiles. The “50MP” and “Quad Pixel” text implies that the Moto G31 may come with a 50-megapixel primary camera. As per Anthony, the phone will pack a 5,000mAh battery with 10W fast charging support, a fingerprint scanner, and could be priced at $210 (roughly Rs. 15,600).

Moto G31 has also been reportedly spotted on the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and Wi-Fi Alliance websites, hinting at a 5,000mAh battery. Furthermore, the phone is tipped to feature a 6.4-inch full-HD+ OLED display, a 3.5mm headphone port at the top, and a USB Type-C port.

Oppo A55s Renders Tip Specifications, Design Details

Oppo A55s launch is yet to be confirmed officially by the Chinese smartphone maker, but ahead of it, several renders of the smartphone have leaked online, offering a glimpse into the possible design and specifications of the handset. The renders of Oppo A55s show a hole-punch design for the selfie camera and suggest two colour options. The new A-series smartphone from Oppo is seen to carry a dual camera unit on the back. Oppo A55s is likely to debut as a budget offering and may lack a side-mounted fingerprint scanner for authentication.

In a report, 91Mobiles shared the renders of Oppo A55s, showcasing its slim form factor. As mentioned, the upcoming Oppo phone is seen with a hole-punch design to house the selfie shooter. The top bezel features a microphone and a power button is placed on the right spine. The renders show volume rockers placed on the left spine. For optics, Oppo A55s is seen carrying a rectangular rear camera module that includes dual sensors along with LED flash. The handset is said to come in Black and Green colours.

Oppo A55s has recently appeared on multiple certification websites, including Geekbench and Bluetooth SIG, suggesting some of its key specifications. It was spotted on Geekbench benchmarking site with model number CPH2309, and the listing says the Oppo A-series smartphone could run on Android 11. Oppo A55s is listed to feature an octa-core Qualcomm chipset along with 4GB RAM. The handset is spotted on the Bluetooth SIG site with two model numbers — A102OP and CPH2309. As per the listing, Oppo A55s will come with Bluetooth v5.1. The Bluetooth SIG listing also shows support for four 5G bands (n3/28/77/78). Further, the upcoming handset is said to come with a 4,000mAh battery and 18W fast charging support.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Series May Pack Snapdragon 898 Chipset

Samsung Galaxy S22 series specifications have been tipped multiple times in the past. The new non-foldable flagship lineup from the company is expected to have the regular Samsung Galaxy S22 model, alongside the Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra. Samsung usually launches two separate models of the Galaxy S series phones, meant for different markets. The handset powered by Qualcomm processor usually arrives in the US market while the variant with Exynos processor debuts in global markets. However, with the launch of the Galaxy S22 lineup, Samsung is reportedly planning to avoid this practice. A fresh leak suggests that the South Korean tech giant will unveil the Galaxy S22 series in India with a Snapdragon processor instead of its Exynos chipset.

Known tipster Max Weinbach (@MaxWinebach) tweeted about the launch of the Snapdragon chipset-powered Galaxy S22 series in more markets. As per a report by Android Police, Asia, Africa, and the US markets will get Snapdragon 898-powered Samsung Galaxy S22 handsets this time. The UK, Europe, and the rest of the world will reportedly get Exynos 2200 processor installed devices. The report further states that Asia and Africa will get separate variants of the Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup for the first time with model numbers — SM-S901E, SM-S906E, and SM-S908E. Both Exynos 2200 and Snapdragon 898 chipsets are yet to be unveiled.

The Galaxy S22 series was earlier said to debut in January but a latest report hints at a launch in February 2022. The upcoming flagship Galaxy S series from Samsung is tipped to be unveiled on February 8 next year at 10am ET (8.30pm IST). Pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup will likely begin the same day and sales are said to start from February 18.

Samsung has not yet confirmed the development of the Galaxy S22 models. So, this information should be considered with a pinch of salt.

Netflix Rolling Out AV1 Streaming on Select TVs, PS4 Pro

Netflix has started streaming AV1 codec to select TVs and PlayStation 4 Pro. AV1 codec is the latest video codec in the industry with a royalty-free license from the Alliance of Open Media (AOMedia). The codec is backed by a group of tech brands including Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Intel, Netflix, Microsoft, and many more. Netflix is now rolling out AV1 streaming on a handful of TVs. However, thanks to the PS4 Pro compatibility, any TV connected to the gaming console can stream Netflix content in AV1. Netflix started rolling out AV1 video streaming on its Android app in February last year.

Netflix announced the launch of AV1 playback on TVs through a blog post on November 9. As AV1 needs more CPU hours to encode, Netflix will initially offer some of its popular titles with the new codec, including Money Heist.

“We have a stream analyser embedded in our encoding pipeline which ensures that all deployed Netflix AV1 streams are spec-compliant. TVs with an AV1 decoder also need to have decoding capabilities that meet the spec requirement to guarantee smooth playback of AV1 streams”, explained Netflix in the blog post.

During playback, Netflix said that it observed a 2 percent reduction in play delay with AV1 streaming. Additionally, on some TVs, noticeable drops in streaming quality were reduced up to 38 percent.

As mentioned, Netflix has started streaming movies and shows encoded in the AV1 codec to compatible TVs as well as TVs connected with PS4 Pro. The AV1 streams require a TV device with an AV1 decoder that meets the specification needs. Netflix assured that they are working with external partners to enable more devices for AV1 streaming. However, the details about the supported devices are not yet revealed by the streaming platform.

As per a report by The Verge, select Samsung 2020 UHD Smart TVs, select Samsung 2020 UHD QLED Smart TVs, and select Samsung 2020 8K QLED Smart TVs will support AV1 codec in Netflix. The list includes Samsung The Frame 2020 Smart TVs, The Serif 2020 Smart TVs, and The Terrace 2020 Smart TVs. According to the report, select Amazon Fire TV devices with Fire OS 7 and above and limited Android TV devices with Android OS 10 and above will also offer AV1 streaming support.

In February last year, Netflix has begun streaming AV1 encoded content through its app for Android mobile devices, replacing the VP9 codec. It was initially unveiled for select titles only.

Coinbase Falls Short on Revenue as Trading Volumes Slump 30 Percent

US cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase on Tuesday reported a nearly 30 percent fall in third-quarter trading volumes on a sequential basis, hit by lower volatility and declining prices for Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Trading volumes fell to $327 billion (roughly Rs. 24,38,041 crore) in the quarter from $462 billion (roughly Rs. 34,44,572 crore) in the second. Of this, Bitcoin comprised 19 percent, down from 24 percent last quarter.

The company’s shares tumbled 13 percent in trading after the bell.

Total revenue fell to $1.31 billion (roughly Rs. 9,767 crore) from $2.23 billion (roughly Rs. 16,626 crore) in the prior quarter, also missing estimates of $1.57 billion (roughly Rs. 11,705 crore).

Crypto exchanges have benefited from the mainstreaming of digital assets, with businesses across the globe investing heavily into growing their crypto infrastructure.

However, calls for more oversight on crypto trading and products triggered a punishing slide in Bitcoin prices earlier this year. Bitcoin price in India as of November 11 at 1:14pm was Rs. 52.77 lakh.

Net income attributable to common shareholders of $405.34 million (roughly Rs. 3,022 crore), or $1.62 (roughly Rs. 120) per share. Analysts had expected a profit of $1.57 (roughly Rs. 117) per share, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.

Watch: GTA Trilogy Remastered Edition’s Gameplay Footage Leaks Online

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition, a remastered version of Rockstar’s iconic open-world action games is set to release today, November 11. Before that, gameplay footage of the new edition has been posted online on YouTube.

The leaks show over an hour of footage of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Although Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition is just one day away from release, Rockstar hasn’t shared any substantial gameplay footage from the remastered games.

A trailer released last month focused almost exclusively on cutscenes from the three games rather than the gameplay enhancements Rockstar is promising for the almost two-decade-old trilogy.

But these leaked gameplay clips give a much better idea of how these remasters will actually play. They show off the games” new weapon selection wheel UI, which they’ve inherited from later GTA games, and give an idea of how the Grand Theft Auto V-inspired controls actually work in practice.

One of the Vice City clips appears to include footage of the player activating a cheat code and spawning in a tank.

Other promised enhancements include overhauled graphics, better navigation via the games” mini maps, and modern quality of life features like Achievements and Trophies on Xbox and PlayStation respectively.

On Switch, the game will feature motion-controlled aiming and touchscreen controls, and on PC the games will be compatible with Nvidia’s DLSS technology.

‘Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition will officially launch digitally on November 11, for $59.99 (roughly Rs. 4,500), and will be available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and newer Series S/ X consoles, and PC via the Rockstar Games Launcher.

A physical release is coming on December 7, while iOS and Android versions are launching in the first half of next year.

Rockstar has also released three official in-game screenshots of the remasters which also show off their user interfaces and the new weapon-select wheel.

The company also confirmed that the games will include over 200 songs across 29 radio stations between the three games. Unfortunately, there’s no sign of the over half a dozen songs removed from Vice City back in 2012, which include Ozzy Osbourne’s Bark at the Moon and Kate Bush’s Wow.
